Yurt Camping is better than Dirt Camping
Date: 06/01/02

For Immediate Release

Burnaby, BC, Canada; - Going back to the 13th century, yurts were used by nomadic Mongolians who trekked across Asia and Eastern Europe. Yurts were the ideal pack-and-go accommodations, good for both the hot and cold climates faced by the Mongols. With a collapsible round frame and a felt cover, yurts were easily transported.

Today's yurt is a vast improvement over the shelters used by the Mongolians, but the basic design and ability to withstand severe weather is the same. Today's yurts feature a wood lattice wall, are covered with flame-retardant water resistant vinyl, have wood rafters and an acrylic skylight that can be opened and closed. The design has evolved into the ideal recreational cabin. With sizes from 12ft. to 24ft. in diameter, yurts are well suited for campgrounds, ski resorts and eco-friendly adventure companies and to provide guest accommodations.

For the recreational property owner yurts offer some attractive benefits. Yurts are portable and can be transported in a pickup truck or boat, allowing for setup on isolated properties. Because yurts are portable, property owners do not require a building permit to setup their yurt. Yurts can be easily setup in one or two days with just two people. Yurts can be ordered with insulated walls and floors to provide comfortable accommodations in summer and winter. Best of all, yurts start at under $5,000 for a 12ft. diameter model.

Burnaby-based Yurtco Manufacturing Inc. began operations in August last year to manufacture yurts for the recreational property owner. In the past, recreational property owners had to buy from manufacturers located in the US. As a recreational property owner himself, Yurtco co-founder Frank Wingelman first saw a yurt on a neighbour's property and decided that it would make a great guest cabin. After researching the purchase of a yurt Wingelman concluded that he could design and build a better yurt at a lower price than US manufacturers. The challenge Yurtco faces now is to educate Canadians on what a yurt is, and the benefits this unique kind of shelter provides.
